Drivetrain
Sequential SportShift Automatic with Paddle Shifters

The 5-speed Sequential SportShift automatic with paddle shifters gives you the best of both worlds by providing the convenience of precise and intuitive automatic shifting as well as shift-for-yourself control.

  • Set the transmission to “Drive” for smooth gear changes with an emphasis on fuel economy. Select “Sport“ for quicker acceleration, as the transmission allows the engine to rev higher before upshifting.
  • Tapping a paddle shifter while in “Drive” brings a quick gear change with automatic operation returning when reaching a steady speed. This allows you to make quick gear changes without changing in and out of manual mode.
  • Using a paddle shifter in “Sport” puts the transmission into full manual mode, where you’ll have complete control in instances such as high-performance or hilly driving.
  • For better climbing or increased downhill engine braking, Grade Logic Control instructs the transmission to hold a lower gear when encountering a steep uphill or downhill grade.
6-Speed Manual Transmission

For those who consider no sport sedan complete without a clutch pedal, the TL SH-AWD offers a 6-speed close-ratio manual transmission. The combination of a manual shift and Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®) makes the TL SH-AWD a true driving enthusiast’s delight.

  • The shifter features even shorter throws than the TSX’s acclaimed linkage for quick, confident shifting.
  • The clutch has low-effort movement to reduce leg fatigue and short pedal movement for faster operation.
  • The hill start assist feature eases manual shift starts on inclines. Sensing an uphill grade, the system holds brake pressure momentarily to avoid rolling backwards as your foot moves from the brake pedal to the throttle.
Super Handling All-Wheel Drive

Though it has the same all-weather attributes of conventional all-wheel drive, Acura developed its revolutionary Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®) system to enhance high-performance dry-road handling. By continuously directing engine power to match weight distribution, available traction, and other conditions, SH-AWD provides seamless power transitions and supreme agility. The result is enhanced high-performance cornering that simply can't be matched by front, rear, or conventional all-wheel drive systems.

  • The system continuously determines the optimal level of power distribution between the front and rear wheels, and also between the rear wheels based on an analysis of wheel speed, steering angle, lateral G-force and yaw rate.
  • For better fuel economy, up to 90% of the power is sent to the front wheels when cruising in a straight line.
  • As weight shifts to the rear of the TL during hard acceleration, the SH-AWD system transfers up to 45% of engine power to the rear wheels to take advantage of available rear-wheel traction.
  • In a curve under hard acceleration, 70% of torque can be directed to the rear—all of which can go to the outside wheel to improve cornering by directing power where weight has shifted.
  • The system reduces understeer and increases stability by turning the outside rear wheel slightly faster than the rest of the wheels, rotating the vehicle through the turn.
Handling
Suspension Systems

The TL’s exceptional ride and handling combination is derived in part from its racing-inspired double-wishbone front suspension system and sophisticated multi-link rear design.

  • The front upper and lower control arms provide precise wheel-position control for a superb, linear steering feel.
  • The front suspension is mounted to an aluminum-alloy sub-frame, isolating noise for a quieter ride.
  • For improved control and stability, both front and rear suspensions have been designed to minimize body movement during braking and acceleration.
  • Rear wheels are firmly positioned by upper A-arms, a toe link, and lower tubular links. For noise reduction, the lower links are mounted to a floating sub-frame.
  • A low center of gravity and front and rear stabilizer bars diminish body roll.
  • TL SH-AWD models get revised suspension tuning for sportier handling.
Steering System

Precision-crafted electric rack-and-pinion steering allows drivers to feel how the wheels are encountering the road through their fingertips.

  • The TL achieves a firm, on-center feel at highway speeds while delivering a precise tactile response during curves, minimizing the need for small corrections.
  • Torque-sensing variable power assist makes steering easy during low-speed activities like parking.
  • At highway speeds, power assist is reduced for a firmer feel.
  • Electric assist does not drain engine power.
  • On models without SH-AWD, a torque steer reduction system reduces engine torque in first and second gears when torque steer is most likely to occur.
  • TL SH-AWD models get revised suspension tuning for a heightened road feel.
Performance Braking

The TL brake system features a firm pedal feel that enables the precise modulation demanded of high-performance driving.

  • Large 12.6-inch ventilated front discs with dual-piston calipers and larger 13.2-inch solid discs in the rear deliver confident, consistent braking in repeated high-use conditions such as spirited mountain-road driving.
  • Ducts in the front air dam of TL SH-AWD models channel air directly to the front brakes for additional cooling.
  • The system comes with the anti-lock braking system (ABS), Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), and Brake Assist.
Rigid Body Structure

The TL body structure enhances acceleration, braking and turning response through weight-saving measures, while its remarkable rigidity allows the suspension to be tuned with greater precision.

  • The substantial use of high-strength steel simultaneously enhances the structure’s overall strength while helping to reduce weight.
  • Additional weight savings come from using aluminum for the hood, front suspension subframe, and rear suspension knuckles.
  • A nearly flat underside reduces aerodynamic drag that helps enhance fuel economy and reduce interior noise levels.
Smooth & Quiet Ride

The TL engine provides smooth, vibration-free operation with best-in-class wind-noise performance.

  • Windshield noise is reduced as a result of three soft noise-absorbing layers sandwiched between two plates of acoustic glass and thick, 5mm side and rear glass.
  • Electronically controlled engine mounts reduce engine noise.
  • An aluminum steering hanging rack reduces vibration.
  • Strengthened chassis mounting points improve suspension isolation.

Exterior

Lighting & Visibility
Rearview Camera

When “Reverse” is engaged on a TL with the Technology Package, the large 8-inch navigation screen will display a view of the space directly behind the vehicle below the driver’s normal field of vision.

  • A camera located discreetly above the rear license plate can provide clear visibility of many things directly behind the vehicle that are too low to be seen from the rear window.
  • The display is also extremely useful when parallel parking.
  • The side mirrors enhance rearward visibility by automatically tilting down when reverse is engaged to reveal any objects close to the side of the car.
HID Headlights

All TL models are equipped with Xenon High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights for the low beams.

  • Xenon lights cast a whiter and brighter light for improved clarity.
  • The HID lenses allow a more precise beam pattern that increases road visibility without blinding oncoming drivers.
Access
Key Remote Functions

The TL key remote was given a few extra convenience features beyond the usual door lock, trunk release and panic button functions.

  • On a hot day, the remote can lower the windows and open the sunroof to air out the TL before you enter.
  • The two primary drivers can each store in memory their driver’s seat and side mirror positions, radio presets, and climate preferences, which link to their key remotes. Their settings will be activated the moment the driver’s door is opened.
  • On models without the Technology Package, the key folds into the remote, making it more compact for carrying.
  • Models with the Technology Package feature the Keyless Start System with push button ignition.

Climate Control
Automatic Climate Control

The TL dual-zone, dual-mode automatic climate control system allows the driver and front passenger to create their own microclimates.

  • Set your desired temperature and airflow distribution however you like, and your front passenger can do the same.
  • When alone, the driver can easily switch off the dual setting and set the whole cabin to a single temperature.
  • Almost all climate control functions can be operated by voice commands.
  • An air filtration system helps keep particulates, dust, and pollen out of the cabin.
GPS-linked Temperature Control

On models equipped with the Technology Package, the automatic climate control system can further enhance occupants’ comfort level by tracking the sun’s position and intensity.

  • The GPS10 positioning technology monitors the sun’s location relative to the car’s position, while a sensor on the dash measures the sun’s intensity.
  • Knowing the sun’s position and strength enables the system to more effectively keep each side of the cabin at its designated temperature.
  • The system is completely automatic and requires no manual adjustments, regardless of outside conditions.

Safety & Security

Braking & Stability
Braking Systems

The TL’s disc brakes are backed up by several electronic systems to provide you with enhanced braking under any circumstance.

  • The anti-lock braking system (ABS) helps you retain steering control in hard braking by preventing the wheels from locking up, while still letting them achieve their maximum level of stopping power.
  • The Electronic Brake Distribution system uses the ABS system to direct braking power among the four wheels, depending on their load, to help optimize braking effectiveness.
  • The Brake Assist system detects emergency braking by monitoring the speed at which the brake pedal is depressed and steps in to ensure the ABS system is activated—terminating immediately upon the driver’s release of the brake pedal.
Vehicle Stability Assist

The Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®)12 system uses an array of sensors along with ABS to minimize the dangers of oversteer or understeer.

  • The system continually monitors vehicle speed, throttle position, individual wheel speeds, steering angle, and vehicle yaw rate.
  • When the potential for oversteer or understeer is detected, SH-AWD® models will redirect power among the front wheels and each of the rear wheels to maintain stability.
  • All models will, when necessary, reduce engine torque and use the anti-lock braking system (ABS) to apply brakes to each wheel as needed to help stabilize the vehicle.
  • The response is so quick that the instability may be corrected before the driver even knows it’s occurring.
  • 12 VSA is not a substitute for safe driving. It cannot correct the vehicle's course in every situation or compensate for reckless driving. Control of the vehicle always remains with the driver.
Tire Pressure Monitoring System

Since an under-inflated tire impedes handling and can be a safety hazard, the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) uses pressure sensors mounted in each wheel that send readings to a central electronic control unit. The system then evaluates whether the pressure is in an acceptable range.

  • If a reading is approximately 25% below the recommended level, the TL will alert the driver through the Multi-Information Display (MID) located on the instrument panel.
  • The under-inflated tire will be indicated, along with the individual pressure for all four tires.
  • The pressure display can be accessed any time, using the MID controls on the steering wheel.
  • As useful as TMPS is, it is still recommended that you manually check your tires on a regular basis.
Safety
Airbag System

The TL is equipped with a sophisticated six-airbag system, which includes two front and two front side, as well as two side curtain airbags with coverage for the front and rear outboard seats. Advanced sensors and inflator systems are designed so that the airbags deploy at the right time with the appropriate force.

  • The front airbags are equipped with two-stage, multiple-threshold inflators. One or both airbags will be deployed only in the event of a sufficient frontal impact. If deployed, these airbags are capable of being inflated at different rates depending on crash severity, seat belt usage and other factors. Frontal airbags are designed to supplement the seat belts to help reduce the likelihood of head and upper body injuries in frontal crashes.
  • Sensors in the front passenger seat determine if it is empty or if the passenger is too small for the passenger’s front airbag to deploy safely, and disengage the front passenger’s front airbag, if necessary.
  • The Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS) uses sensors in the front passenger seatback to determine the height and position of the passenger. The system will deactivate the passenger’s front-side airbag if a child or small-statured adult is leaning into the airbag deployment path.
  • In a side impact, side curtain airbags deploy downward from just above the doorframes on the impacted side to help protect both front and outboard rear seat occupants.
Seat Belts & Active Front Head Restraints

All five seating positions in the TL have 3-point belts and head restraints. The front seats have load-limiting pretensioners and active head restraints.

  • Pretensioners react in the first milliseconds of an impact to automatically tighten the belts and help hold the individual in position against the seatback.
  • To help prevent the pretensioners from causing undue pressure on the chest, load limiters slightly relieve belt tension, as needed, to help soften the force.
  • In a rear-end collision, when the front seat occupant’s body is pushed against the seatback, the pressure forces the head restraint upward and forward to reduce the gap between the occupant’s head and the head restraint.
  • Impact forces on the neck and spine are diminished, helping reduce the likelihood of whiplash injuries.
Child Safety

The TL has several features addressing child safety, from sophisticated airbag sensors to anchors that secure child seats.

  • The Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS) utilizes sensors in the front passenger's seatback to detect if the occupant is a child or small-statured adult. If such an occupant is leaning into the side airbag’s deployment path, the side airbag will be deactivated until they resume a safer, more upright position.
  • LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) anchors, plus upper-tether anchors in the rear seat allow LATCH-compatible child seats to be installed in the outboard positions without the use of seat belts.
  • All windows and the moonroof have an auto-reverse feature that prevents them from closing if an obstacle is encountered.
Body Structure Design

Acura utilizes Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure to enhance occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal crashes.

  • The ACE™ design utilizes a network of connected structural elements to distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle.
  • This enhanced frontal crash energy management helps to reduce the forces transferred to the passenger compartment and can help to more evenly disperse the forces transferred to the other vehicles in a crash.
