Engine
3.7-liter VTEC V-6

The RL offers one of the most powerful and refined V-6 engines in its class, with a 3.7-liter VTEC® engine producing a peak of 300 horsepower and 271 lb-ft of torque, while EPA Estimated Fuel Economy is 16 city / 22 highway.27 This technologically advanced engine includes the following features:

  • Variable valve Timing and Electronic lift Control (VTEC), which adjusts timing and lift of the 24 valves according to rpm, facilitating immediate response
  • PGM-FI Programmed Fuel Injection, ensuring precise, efficient fuel use
  • Drive-by-Wire™ throttle system, providing a smoother and more precise accelerator connection
  • All-aluminum alloy construction to keep the engine lightweight for improved handling and rigid for low vibration
  • 27 Based on 2010 EPA mileage estimates, reflecting new EPA fuel economy methods beginning with 2008 models. Use for comparison purposes only. Do not compare to models before 2008. Your actual mileage will vary, depending on how you drive and maintain your vehicle.
VTEC

VTEC®, which stands for Variable valve Timing and Electronic lift Control, is a little like having an on-demand racing camshaft in your engine to give you high rpm power without compromising low rpm torque.

  • When engine speed reaches a designated rpm, the intake and exhaust valves open deeper and longer to enhance airflow and allow the RL to continue to build horsepower at levels where other engines may run out of steam.
  • When used in tandem with the 2-stage manifold system, the driver enjoys plenty of low-end power around town and reserve power on the open road.
Drive-by-Wire Throttle

Derived from Acura’s racing program, the RL Drive-by-Wire™ throttle system is a sophisticated electronic system that enables a smooth, powerful response with just the right throttle sensitivity in every driving situation.

  • The system replaces the usual cables and linkages between the accelerator pedal and engine throttle.
  • It factors in data, such as engine rpm, coolant temperature and road speed from various sensors before adjusting the throttle.
  • The system communicates with the transmission to enable quick, seamless gear changes.
Drivetrain
Sequential SportShift Automatic

Whether you want to take full command of the transmission or just make a quick passing maneuver, the steering wheel-mounted Sequential SportShift paddle shifters deliver quick, precise shifts at your fingertips.

  • The Grade Logic Control system monitors throttle position, vehicle speed, acceleration and deceleration in order to recognize steep inclines so it can avoid gear hunting.
  • The steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters deliver quick, precise shifts at your fingertips.
  • A tap of the paddle shifter when “D” is selected brings a quick gear change before returning to automatic operation when the RL has resumed a steady speed. This allows you to make manual gear changes when needed, such as for passing, without changing in and out of manual mode.
  • For quicker acceleration, select “S,” and the transmission allows the engine to rev higher before shifting. Using a paddle shifter in “S” puts the transmission into full manual mode, where you have direct control of all shifting.
SH-AWD

Acura developed its revolutionary Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®) system to enhance high-performance dry road handling, as well as to improve traction on wet and low-traction surfaces.

  • Unlike many all-wheel drive systems which merely react to wheel slippage, SH-AWD is a proactive system that continuously determines the optimal level of power distribution between the front and rear axles and between the rear wheels, based on a reading of a wide variety of vehicle conditions.
  • The system enhances steering by sending available rear power to the outside wheel and rotating it slightly faster than the front wheels, propelling it through the turn.
  • The result is cornering that neither front, rear, or conventional all-wheel drive systems can equal.
Power Distribution

The Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®) system distributes power between the front and rear axles and between the rear wheels based on an analysis of wheel speed, steering angle, lateral G-force, and yaw rate. By increasing the power distributed to the wheels in greatest need, the RL handles most any condition with surprising poise and agility.

  • Power between the rear wheels is distributed by a pair of electromagnetic clutches that can actively direct any combination of power between the two rear wheels in fractions of a second.
  • When cruising in a straight line, up to 70% of the power is sent to the front wheels, while in hard acceleration or on inclines, up to 45% of the power can be transferred to the rear wheels.
  • When accelerating through a hard corner, up to 70% of the power can be directed to the rear wheels—all of which can be directed to the outside wheel, if needed.
Steering Enhancement

Direct Yaw Control is part of the RL Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®) system that helps the RL attack curves with greater stability by directing the outside rear wheel to turn slightly faster than the average of the front two wheels.

  • In a fast curve, the combination of power shifting to the outside wheel and about 6% greater wheel speed causes the RL to rotate into the turn.
  • The rotating motion lightens the lateral load on the front tires reducing understeer.
Chassis
Suspension Systems

With over 300 horsepower behind it, the RL is fitted with a racing-inspired double-wishbone front suspension system and sophisticated multi-link rear design.

  • The front wishbone design helps to effectively isolate the springs and shocks from lateral forces.
  • The front geometry is tuned to provide a distinctly linear steering feel while cornering, providing more precision and confidence.
  • The rear multi-link system provides all the high-performance benefits of the double wishbone setup, such as solid resistance to lateral forces, but also features a geometry that helps deter rear-end lift during braking.
  • Both front and rear suspensions are constructed largely of forged aluminum, which lowers unsprung weight to reduce shock from surface bumps.
  • Lightweight components help to maximize tire-to-pavement contact.
  • To further isolate the cabin from road harshness, the suspension is mounted to a lightweight aluminum subframe.
Braking System

With 300-horsepower on tap, class-leading stopping power is a must for the RL, and it delivers beautifully.

  • 12.6-inch diameter cast-iron ventilated discs team with 4-piston aluminum brake calipers.
  • 12.2-inch diameter cast-iron ventilated discs are gripped by single-piston aluminum brake calipers.
  • The RL anti-lock Braking system (ABS) pulses the brake pressure to a wheel if it detects potential lockup.
Steering System

Precision-crafted variable power-assist rack-and-pinion steering allows drivers to feel how the wheels are encountering the road through their fingertips.

  • The RL achieves a firm, on-center feel at highway speeds while delivering a precise tactile response during curves, minimizing the need for small corrections.
  • Torque-sensing variable power assist makes steering easy during low-speed activities like parking.
  • At highway speeds, power assist is reduced for a firmer feel.
Body Structure

A rigid body and frame is essential to high performance, while weight is its enemy. Therefore, the bulk of RL body construction is made up of advanced, weight-reducing materials.

  • Strong, lightweight magnesium alloys are used for the front seat frames and engine valve covers.
  • Several exterior body components, such as the hood, front fenders, and the trunk lid, are made of aluminum, as opposed to steel.
  • Significant use of high-tensile steel in crucial areas throughout the body serves to enhance strength while minimizing overall mass.

  • Almost all climate control functions can be operated by voice commands.
GPS-Linked Temperature Control

On models equipped with the Technology Package, the automatic temperature control system is enhanced by a GPS-linked solar sensor9, which enables the system to compensate for the sun’s position when maintaining cabin temperature.

  • The GPS link monitors the sun’s intensity and location relative to the vehicle, enabling the system to know if the sun is significantly warming one side of the cabin.
  • The system will then increase coolness or reduce heat on that side in order to maintain the designated temperature.
  • The system is completely automatic and requires no manual adjustments, regardless of outside conditions.

Safety & Security

Braking & Stability
Braking Systems

The disc brakes on the RL are backed up by several sophisticated electronic systems to provide you with enhanced braking under any circumstance.

  • The anti-lock Braking System (ABS) helps you retain steering control in emergency braking by preventing the wheels from locking up, while allowing them to achieve their maximum level of stopping.
  • The Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) system uses the ABS system to direct braking power among the four wheels, depending on their load, to help optimize braking effectiveness.
  • The Brake Assist system detects emergency braking by the driver by monitoring the speed at which the brake pedal is depressed and steps in by maximizing braking force, which terminates immediately upon release of the brake pedal.
Collision Mitigation Braking System

To help reduce the potential likelihood and force of a frontal impact, the CMBS/ACC Package includes the Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™).

  • Powered by a radar transmitter mounted behind the RL grille, a signal is constantly transmitted and the return signal is evaluated, determining the distance and closing speed of vehicles that lie directly ahead.
  • If a collision is possible, the system will provide audio and visual alerts to warn the driver.
  • If the driver does not take action to reduce speed, the CMBS will automatically tug at the driver’s seat belt and begin light braking.
  • Even if no prior warnings have been given, if at any time the system senses that a frontal collision is unavoidable it will tighten the front seat belts and automatically apply strong braking to help reduce the impact velocity and collision force. However, the system is not designed to bring the vehicle to a complete stop by itself.
  • CMBS is part of the CMBS/ACC Package that also includes Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and genuine curly maple wood trim. The Package is available on models equipped with the Technology Package.
Vehicle Stability Assist

The Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®)12 system monitors stability factors to detect oversteer or understeer, and if detected, VSA uses a series of the RL systems to avoid the problem.

  • VSA continually monitors vehicle speed, throttle position, individual wheel speeds, steering angle and vehicle yaw rate.
  • If potential oversteer or understeer is detected, the system will first use Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®) to redirect power among the front wheels and each of the rear wheels to maintain stability
  • If using SH-AWD is insufficient, the system will reduce engine torque and use the ABS to apply brakes to each wheel as needed to help stabilize the vehicle.
  • The response is so quick that the instability may be corrected before the driver even knows it’s occurring.
  • 12 VSA is not a substitute for safe driving. It cannot correct the vehicle's course in every situation or compensate for reckless driving. Control of the vehicle always remains with the driver.
Tire Pressure Monitoring System

Since an under-inflated tire impedes handling and can be a safety hazard, the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) uses pressure sensors mounted in each wheel that send readings to a central electronic control unit. The system then evaluates whether the pressure in each tire is within an acceptable range.

  • If a reading is approximately 25% below the recommended level, the RL will alert the driver through the Multi-Information Display (MID) located on the instrument panel.
  • The problem tire will be indicated, along with the individual pressure for each of the four tires.
  • The pressure display can be accessed anytime, using the MID controls on the steering wheel.
  • As useful as TMPS is, it is still recommended that you manually check your tires on a regular basis.
Lighting & Visibility
Active Front Lighting System

To help you see farther into a turn at night, the RL Xenon HID low-beam headlight on the side of the turn direction can swivel up to 20 degrees to the outside. This illuminates the edges of the road and guides your turn as spots typically left in the dark are lit.

  • While especially helpful on curving roads, it also operates when making a right-hand turn from a standing start at an intersection.
  • AFS will not work from a standing start on a left-hand turn, so as not to shine into the eyes of drivers of oncoming traffic.
  • AFS works automatically without buttons to push or settings to configure, although the driver may manually turn it off, if desired.
Body Structure
Advanced Compatibility Engineering

Acura utilizes Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure to enhance occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal crashes.

  • The ACE™ design utilizes a network of connected structural elements to distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle.
  • This enhanced frontal crash energy management helps to reduce the forces transferred to the passenger compartment and can help to more evenly disperse the forces transferred to other vehicles in a crash.
  • Every Acura designed with this system and tested by NHTSA, has received a 5 stars rating on their frontal impact test.
Restraint Systems
Airbag System

The RL is equipped with a sophisticated 6-airbag system consisting of two front and two front side airbags, as well as two side curtain airbags that provide coverage for the front and outboard rear seats. Advanced sensors and inflator systems are designed to enable airbags to deploy at precisely the right time with the appropriate force.

  • The front airbags are equipped with two-stage, multiple-threshold inflators. One or both airbags will be deployed only in the event of a sufficient frontal impact. If deployed, these airbags are capable of being inflated at different rates depending on crash severity, seat belt usage and other factors. Frontal airbags are designed to supplement the seat belts to help reduce the likelihood of head and upper body injuries in frontal crashes.
  • Sensors in the front passenger seat determine if it is empty or if the passenger is too small for the passenger’s front airbag to deploy safely and will disengage the front passenger airbag, if necessary.
  • The front passenger seat is equipped with the Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS), which uses sensors in the seatback to determine the height and position of the passenger. The system will deactivate the side airbag if a child or a small-statured adult is leaning into the side airbag deployment path.
  • In a sufficient side impact, side curtain airbags deploy downward from just above the doorframes on the impacted side to help protect both front and outboard rear seat occupants.
Seat Belts & Active Front Head Restraints

All five seating positions in the RL have 3-point belts. The front seat belts are equipped with an automatic tensioning and load-limiter system.

  • Automatic tensioning belts react in the first milliseconds of an impact to automatically tighten the belts and help hold a front seat occupant in position against the seatback.
  • To help prevent the automatic tensioning belt from causing undue pressure on the chest, load limiters slightly relieve belt tension, as needed, to help soften the force.

The front seats are equipped with active head restraints.

  • In a rear-end collision, a front seat occupant's body will be pushed against the seatback, and the pressure to the seatback is transmitted from the lumbar plate, pushing the head restraint upward and forward to reduce the gap between the occupant’s head and seat head restraint.
  • Impact forces on the head, neck and spine are diminished, helping reduce the likelihood of whiplash injuries.
Child Safety
Child Safety

The RL has several features addressing child safety, from sophisticated airbag sensors to anchors that secure child seats.

  • The Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS) utilizes sensors in the front passenger's seatback to detect if the occupant is a child or small-statured adult. If such an occupant is leaning into the deployment path of the side airbag, the side airbag will be deactivated until they resume a safer, more upright position.
  • LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) anchors plus upper-tether anchors in the rear seat allow LATCH-compatible child seats to be installed in the outboard positions without the use of seat belts.
  • All windows and the moonroof have an automatic reverse feature that prevents them from closing if a finger or other obstacle is encountered.
Security
Security

Like every Acura model, the RL comes equipped with a security system. In the event of a break-in, the following events will occur:

  • The ignition will be disabled.
  • The horn will sound.
  • The lights will flash.

Several safeguards are also built into the RL Keyless Access System:

  • If a jacket or purse containing the remote is placed in the trunk, the lid will pop open, and a warning sound will alert you.
  • If you exit the RL with the remote in hand while the vehicle is running, after closing the door, the navigation system screen and Multi-Information Display (MID) will flash a message, and a warning alert will sound.

Maintenance Minder System

Rather than using a static table of time and mileage to keep track of maintenance, the RL Maintenance Minder™ system calculates service needs based on how the vehicle is driven — not just how many miles it is driven.

  • It checks engine operating conditions, such as weather extremes, stop-and-start traffic and frequent short trips.
  • It helps coordinate oil service dates and other maintenance check-ups to minimize your trips to the service department.
  • In the unlikely event your RL has a malfunction, the onboard monitoring system will detect it and use AcuraLink® to relay diagnostic codes to your dealer for further analysis.
  • Having a Bluetooth®11-enabled phone with the HandsFreeLink® profile further streamlines the RL's convenient onboard monitoring system, allowing you to communicate directly with your dealer.
  • When your RL is in the dealer's service bay, repair technicians can plug into its onboard monitoring system directly to pinpoint problems.
  • 11 The Bluetooth® word mark and logos are owned by the Bluetooth SIG, Inc., and any use of such marks is under license.
